Puget Sound Destinations
One of our first destinations aboard our 23 foot sailboat was Blake Island. For a new sailor it was a quite an adventure. Blake Island lies just a few miles northwest of Vashon Island and for a power boat it is a short trip from Point Defiance or Des Moines, but in a sailboat it's a whole different story. Can't remember how long it took but it seemed like it took us most of the day. The weather was excellent and the wind and tide was cooperative, so the sailing experience was just great. In this case, getting there was half the fun. Blake is an excellent destination for either a day trip or an over night stay. It's a great place for picnicking, camping, claming, swimming, fishing and scuba diving or just hanging out and enjoying the scenery. The park area on Blake Island consists of roughly 476 acres with about 7,300 feet of shoreline. The Island can only be accessed by private boat or the Tillicuum Village concession boat. Inside the manmade breakwater there are floats with space for 30 to 40 boats, mooring buoys outside the breakwater, campsites, picnic tables, shelters, fire rings, restrooms, a pump out station, showers and hiking trails. From May through September tour boats ferry visitors from pier 56 in Seattle to the Island for a catered Salmon buffet and to view the Indian dances at the Tillicuum Village. Private boaters can participate in the dinner or just watch the activities. If you are staying overnight, you'll love the night time view of the Seattle city lights, the Space Needle, lights from the ferries and the lights from air traffic at SeaTac airport. For you long time boaters, if you haven't tried Blake Island, give it a try, I know you will enjoy your visit. For those of you just starting your boating experience, it should be quite an adventure.
